Big Sur

The fire in Big Sur up in back of me here on the Central Coast is 65% contained this morning. The smoke and ash has lessened a great deal. We are so relieved. Highway 1 is opened and the news has brought a lot of people to town here in Cambria. I understand too that businesses are opening back up in Big Sur.

The condors have survived,we have a very large area that is a sanctuary for them and the young were air lifted out. The older followed their instincts and prevailed. The firemen , heroes all, beat back the fire and saved our historic structures there. So much loss in homes, wildlife and majestic pines. Thankfully no lives lost!

The Big Sur is spiritual, nature at its most pristine. It will most certainly return to it's magnificent grandeur.

A heartfelt thank you to all of the brave heroic firemen and so too the many courageous workers and volunteers.

God Bless, XO Susan

Clay and Glass show ,Palo Alto

What a fabulous day! Yesterday Gayle and I went to Palo Alto to the huge Clay and glass show.

Incredible work, miles of it!! Alot of Gayles artists from her gallery were participating and that was fun. A wonderful demonstration on the wheel. Throwing off the hump which I had never seen, (Nichibei Potters)all of you potters out there know what that is!?
The most beautiful glass work and huge clay pieces, thrown and hand built and sculpture. All of it just blow away! I didn't leave with out a little something!
Gayle met up with many of her artists and I was so fortunate to be introduced to some of these extraordinary glass makers and potters.

It was a beautiful day, a bit of smoke from the fires but not too bad. Nice for the artists and a wonderful turn out. If you ever get a chance to go it should not be missed!!

Highway 1 is open to Big Sur!! We are so happy to hear that. God Bless the Fire men, real heros!

ACEO

Good Morning!
While I am waiting for the batterie to charge up in my camera I thought I would tell you of a movement that is afoot. I am so excited! Have you heard about ACEO's? They are very small paintings or collage, or anything in the artworks that is done in a 2.5 x3.5 format. The size of a playing card.
Originating during the Impressionist period they were called ATC's, art trading cards. Traded and collected by artists who wanted to have a sample of another artists work. Also called "pocket art."
ACEO's are "art cards editions and originals". These small cards are now being done by artists and traded and sold. The price varies depending on subjects and time involved.
I am enthralled! Loving abstracts as I do I painted several of these small pieces and am going to offer them for sale. I will be painting all kinds of subjects, some more detailed than others and priced accordingly.
I will be adding them to the blog later today and adding them to my FAA site too. I hope you like them, it is a fun and affordable way to collect art!

Clay Work

Well, it finally happened, the dreaded kiln breakdown! Yep, had a bunch of work in side and the element broke apart.....terrible! A set back! Until I can get a new one (this one has been hanging on by a thread) when ever that is, I will have to wait to fire these pieces. Anyone have a kiln they want to sell?? Geez......

I will try to get out of this funk mood I am now in and go out to the studio and paint!
So see you soon with a new painting!

New Work

Good Morning!

It is a gorgeous morning here on the coast and I hope it is where you are too!

I am getting ready to go out to my studio and work. I have a commission in clay to start today and I also have some small pieces to make for the Chambers Gallery.
How ever, I feel an abstract coming on! Must not be deterred but I am inspired! I was reading this morning of something called Yupo. It is a plastic paper primarily used by watercolor artists. Have any of you painters out there experimented with it?

I did read of one artist who used oils on it, that is what I want to try.Apparently the paint doesn't absorb, it has a degree of difficulty because putting on layers isn't possible! It just moves what is already underneath! That can be frustrating to say the least! There must be a drying technique...hair dryer for water color...well anyway, that is my next experiment!
Please let me know if you have tried it, I would love to have your input!

More on this later! XO Susan

Still Here?

I have been erratic with my blog posts! I am so sorry. I know many of you have told me you come in to Morning Paintings with your cup of coffee and there are no new posts! I seem to be all over the place.
I am painting this morning and getting back to a routine hopefully. The wind had kept me from my studio (impossible out there) so painting was not fun!
This time of the year there are so many wonderful things calling to me! Potting new plants, dabbeling with clay again, working on mosiacs and visitors!! I am sure you are very busy too, traveling, playing in your garden, painting, crafts and many of you are off to work!
So, I am off to work too! I will have a small painting up this afternoon! Promice!

I hope you are "still here!"

Thankyou as always, XO Susan

HOME!!

Got back from my trip late last night.
So much to do today and I want to paint tomorrow! Hope I can! Can't wait to get back to it! I have some ideas for very large work in a landscape type piece. One of my students Sunday wanted to paint a landscape, quite large. It was of Big Sur, beautiful photograph. Big Sur is right up in back of me here on the Central Coast. I have been there many times and it was fun to help her with the painting and made me enthusiastic to try a landscape too. Great thing about teaching, it always inspires me. The inspiriation works both ways. She did a great job too!
I am posting a photo of Big Sur. From a 3 day trip that my girl friends and I took a while back. Such fun! What a spiritual place.
I would like to work up a small floral I think for tomorrow. I made a couple of sketches.

I spent alot of time with my daughter too, and grandson, fun!! Weather was gorgeous! Always great to be back home isn't it?

I cut a big bouquet of Rose Mary, and the house smells so wonderful! It is so uplifting!

See you tomorrow!! XO Susan

Gayle's Red Wall

For the past couple of days I have been going to the Chamber's Gallery to help out with the big re- decorating! It has turned out just beautifully. If you haven't seen it you will have to take a bit of time and go. She has just done a spectacular re-vamp!.
The color is a sort of a burnt Chinese Red. Vickie Greene was in yesterday, a wonderful artist ( a former window display artist in Los Angeles) helping Gayle with displays. Gayle has a wonderful eye and it was fun for her to get another bit of input. Watching Vickie create was a real treat. I have seen pieces that I had seen in the past but in her hands and against the red wall, wow! She and I both have our work on the wall, we couldn't wait to see how it looked. Stunning! If I do say so myself!!

The other wall is going to be a sort of flesh color, very pale, a pink but not really pink. She picked large pieces of potterie from the other artists, in wonderful blues and pinks and found a pink in my large seascape that she sort of matched pieces to.
The wall is soft, compared to the red wall, a gorgeous look with all the red. Cool and calm. Linda Huggens beautiful plein aire pieces are on the wall in their quiet strength.

Paula Teplitz new pottery work is on the red wall and on tall cubes and it just pops! It belongs there. Janette Wolf has a wonderful bicycle painting, very loose and rich with the very same red color of the wall!! It is right by the door as you walk in.

Speaking of the door , instead of being red it is now a rich black! It looks like the doors in France and England and Gayles recent adventure to Ireland.
I have one of my perenial roosters hanging their to welcome guests.

Gayle has wonderful artists and their beautiful work is now displayed a new!! Come see!!

POND 2

24x30 oil on canvas. Abstract expressionist painting. These two paintings of the "POND" actually work well together , I didn't intend for that to happen but because I used the same pallette, pinks and greens they work well as a pair. These paintings are each priced at 1800.

Tuesday, April 15

POND

24x30 Abstract expressionist oil painting on canvas. Yep, back to the abstracts for a while. This is an abstracted lily pond. In my favorite pinks and greens with a lovely dash of orange! 1800.
